I had the privilege of being sworn in to the practice of law by a member of the Arizona Supreme Court several decades ago in Phoenix. I still remember the opening comment during his speech leading up to the ceremony.

“I’m very glad I’m not starting my legal career with you today.”

This was a peculiar thing to say to the newly minted lawyers eager and excited to embark on their careers. But he quickly clarified his opening remark, focusing on two issues that he argued were much less complicated when he began his practice: professionalism and pricing for legal services.

Fast forward to 2018 and both issues persist, with pricing for legal services spiraling ever higher. Pretrial discovery (and especially eDiscovery) remains one of the most expensive aspects of litigation, second only to trial itself.

Enter the Buying Legal Council, led by Dr. Silvia Hodges Silverstein – the Council’s Executive Director, Lecturer in Law at Columbia Law School, and Adjunct Professor at Fordham Law School. Headquartered in New York, the Council serves as the “international trade organization for professionals tasked with sourcing legal services and managing supplier relationships,” with a “laser-sharp focus on the buying of legal, alternative, and ancillary legal services.”

The Council’s professional education activities fall into four categories.

  • Legal Procurement Conferences. The Council’s signature Legal Procurement Conferences are held annually in EMEA, APAC, and North America, with a brand new DACH conference that premiered in June. Level 2 Legal is proud to be a continuing corporate sponsor of the North America conference, scheduled this year for September 5th and 6th.
  • Best Practices Webinars. Held monthly, the Council’s Best Practices Webinars are one-hour “members-only calls for buyers of legal services,” with a “focus on practical information and solutions.” I am honored to present this year’s eDiscovery session, scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on October 17, 2018. We’ll review the eDiscovery lifecycle, discuss ways to budget for and control eDiscovery costs, plus leave plenty of time for questions and dialogue. Contact me for more information.
  • Legal Lessons Webinars. With an internationally diverse membership that includes not only attorneys, but also many allied professionals, the Council’s Legal Lessons Webinars “help close the knowledge gap [with monthly] 60-minute live webinars on a variety of [substantive] legal topics and [comparative] legal systems” that are designed to help members “become better, more sophisticated buyers of legal services.”
  • Legal Procurement Dialogue Calls. Held at least quarterly, the Council’s Legal Procurement Dialogue Calls are “‘open mic’ sessions where [sellers of legal and ancillary services] can ask a seasoned legal procurement professional anything [they] ever wanted to know about legal procurement.” Always enlightening, the calls facilitate “a dialogue with law firms, legal service providers, software companies, and other stakeholders in the legal industry,” as only “when buyers and sellers of legal services communicate with each other and have a dialogue can there be a ‘win-win.’”

I believe the Justice who swore me in would not only appreciate the work of the Buying Legal Council, but he would also wholeheartedly endorse its efforts in education and dialogue. For until we figure out a way to bring back the alleged halcyon days of private practice, groups like the Council are our best bet for helping buyers and sellers of legal services arrive at “win-win” arrangements.
